Text Book Review

Text book review.

Title: Mathematics Form 3.
Author: Yoong Kwee Soon, Sim Kwang Yaw, Ding Hong Eng, Noorliah Binti Ahmad, Lai Jun Siew.
Editors: Tiew Eyan Keng, Mahmood Sahrel Bin Wahid, Latifah Binti Hamzah.
Publisher: Ebiza Sdn Bhd

Organization:

The text book already provides the good table of contents, glossary and index. The table of contents is quite specific and easy to refer. In glossary part, the author stated the important term that can be found through out the text book. It also includes the translation for the term in Bahasa Melayu. This will help the student to understand well the term because before this they learn it in Bahasa Melayu. In the index page, the authors provide the student with the specific notation that they use in this text book and it is clearly stated the page that they can found this notation/term. However, the indexes for K, Q, W, X, Y, Z are not stated in this text book. It is maybe there is no important notation that begins with this letter, but in my opinion the author should try to find the other notation that begin with this letter in this text book for example W=width. This may help the student to find the correct chapters that include all the information about width.

Going through the table of content, I think it show the logical arrangement and development of the subject. However, I still though that the improvement can be made by putting the last chapter after chapter 9. The trigonometry chapter is related more related with the chapter 9 and above, so the student may understand it better if the related chapter have been teach in the same range of time.

I would like to comment about the appearance of this text book. The cover page is beautiful and shows that it is relevant with the subject. However, the color of the pages in each chapter is too bad and not interesting. The first chapter is quite good with the blue color but at the beginning of the chapter two the color of pages are a little bit dull. The picture of tiles in page 14 is not clear and the readers cannot see clearly what the object was. Furthermore, the next page in the same chapter was covered with blue color. It looks like cheap text book and the publisher is run out of the ink. I think if the publisher should standardize the color of the pages or put the same color for the whole chapter, then the picture should be color as well.

The reference, bibliographies and the other reference are clearly stated and it may help the student and the teacher to find the extra information based on the list of reference. For the introduction of each chapter, it is really good because the author give the simple example in the real life that helps the student to think. The student also is able to relate the formulae that they learn in the real life and realize the usage of it. For example in chapter 6 page124, it help the student to be aware that math is not only the numbers but more than that.

Content:

The content of this text book is met the local and also the national standard. For me, the content is accurate since all the author is expert in this field. The information also is quite up to date based on the example given and also based on the reference book that they use. In addition, the content also is supported by the other web page that the student can visit in order to get the additional information. Moreover, in my short observation the languages that have been use are appropriate and clear, it also does not contain the grammatical error.

I loved to talk about the question part where this book provides the quizzes in all subchapters. This helps the student to measure their understanding of each subchapter. Moreover, it also provides the mini project for the student called ‘exploring mathematics’. This helps the student to enjoy learning the subject and also helping them to experience the fun of learning math. In the other part, the lesson also link to the other subject such as art (introduction chapter 2) and Physics (introduction chapter 6). However, not all activities that have been provided are suitable and fun for form 3 student. For instance, the ‘Exploring Mathematics’ part in chapter 3 (page 38), the student been ask to folded the paper. In my point of view, the form 3 student should be provided with more interesting and challenging activities such as provided different type of ball and give them the tape to measure the ball and ask them to relate it to the radius and also the chord. It helps the student to be more exited and be more creative. The teacher also is able to know the real potential of their student. We should think that they are not the kindergarten kids to play with the paper but give them more challenging activities.

Physical Aspect:

Other than organization and contents, I would like to share my point of view in term of physical aspect. This is also one of the important parts because the size and weight of the books also need to be suitable with the target group. For this text book the weight and the size is perfect and suitable for the form 3 student to carry it out. Moreover, the font and the picture that have been use are suitable. Others, the table and graph also are relevant and functional for student to understand better and to help them to solve the problem.

Overall:

Personally, this is the good text book. But the author and also the publisher should go back and revise it again in order to provide the better source of knowledge suitable for the group target and also up to date according to this new dimension of world.
